The Idea of the Project

East/West as t(i/he)me

We are not talking as much of the people who actually claim that the GDR should live again, i.e. be somehow re-established. We reject this idea. People with this opinion exist, and they will be accounted for. But not primarily. We are interested in less conscious "life". An example: when on May 9 countless people, particularly Russians, pass through the arch leading to the Treptow memorial, to commemorate the victory of the Soviets over the Nazis, are they continuing a "life" of the GDR as such? Do the Stalin quotes on the marble slabs of the memorial do this as well? Do things, buildings, physical configurations speak in this way?

The theme is time and also our time. Thus the play on words "t(i/he)me", fusing both words into one. We want, among other things,  to answer the question: where are you today when you stand on the ground which was the GDR? Does the "life" of the GDR remain in this space, precisely by your being there?

The question also covers space which was particularly structured and administered NOT to be the GDR, i.e. West Berlin, or all territories, particularly of Germany which became the "West"?  It thus also is a question of the "East" of East Germany, but as a time, not as a geographical direction.
